We broke into 3 groups. Each group got a map.
First, we looked at the map and asked questions about the different areas and n-s-e-w (north, south, east, west) directions. For example, is Peace College in the north or south side of downtown? Is US-64 on the east or west side of downtown? What street runs north and south in the middle of downtown?
Then we practiced telling about different places: Where is it? What is it? How do I get there?
Example:
How do I get to the Executive Mansion (where the governor lives)?
How do I get to a post office?
How do I get to the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel?
How do I get to the NC Symphony for a cultural event?
How do I get to the MC Museum of History?
How do I get to the New Oakwood Café? They have very good Cuban food.
After break: emergency preparedness activity.
We separated into 4 groups. Each group was assigned a different situation (tornado, flood, ice storm with no electricity, stranded at airport)
1) answer in writing and orally “What is the danger?” What could happen?
2) Talk as a group to decide what should you do to stay safe.
3) Use black dictionaries p 145, 1 per group. Go over emergency supply list on natural disaster page. As a group , create a list of what you would put in an emergency kit (What would you need IF…” Add 3 other items not listed. Prioritize the top 5 Present top 5 to class with reason why for each.
Homework: each student should pick one place downtown that they like or would like to see. Go with your family during the weekend and take a picture of yourself for the class.
